Steven Cheng

Steven Cheng is a computer musician, sound artist, and audio engineer, graduating with dual degrees in Computer Music and Recording Arts from the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University. His practice investigates sound as a psychological and spatial phenomenon, using beating patterns, interference, sum and difference tones, and multi-channel diffusion to explore the instability of perception.

His work also engages with contemporary digital culture, transforming fragmented and meaningless visual media into artistic material that reflects the absurdity, overstimulation, and emptiness of the present moment.

Across his projects, Cheng is drawn to the tension between noise and stillness, aggression and restraint — seeking a form of calmness that functions as resistance against hostility, chaos, and conflict.
